This skill is meant to help you see all the positive and negative consequences of behavior. The eventual goal of pros and cons is to help you see that tolerating distress and accepting reality leads to less suffering than rejecting reality and using faulty methods of coping.
To do this thoroughly and effectively, make a 4 part list or chart. Pros of doing the action and pros of not doing the action, then cons of doing the action and cons of not doing the action.
Example: You’re in the middle of class and you’re tired. You decide to yourself that you may want to get up and leave class early so you can go home and get some more sleep. However, you take into consideration that leaving class early will impact your grade and possibly lead you to fail. You decide to stay in class and take a nap when it’s over instead.
Example: You’re dealing with painful emotions and are having urges to self-harm. You look at the pros and cons and remember that your problem will not go away and you’ll potentially be putting your life at risk over a temporary problem. You decide to tolerate the emotional pain and don’t self-harm. Your emotional pain soon subsides and you are safe.
